Plus Size Coats

Most people think that if they find a rack of plus size coats and pick the right size then they will look good. But as a plus size person myself I know that all styles are NOT created equal and just because it’s the right size it may make me look like a balloon and that’s not the image I’m going for. I want to look great and fabulous in all my plus size coats so I’ve put together this guide to assist you in your shopping.

As people we are all different. Different sizes, heights, personalities etc… and when it comes to body shape there are 4 basic shapes for the plus size body. Each of these shapes will determine which plus size coats will look the best on your figure. It will be the difference between feeling great and wearing your coat all season long or putting it in the closet and choosing other options because you don’t feel your best in your new coat.

If you don’t already know, the best way to determine your body shape is to look in the mirror or have a friend measure you. You are looking at your shoulders, waist, hips and bust/chest proportions. Most people fall into the following 4 categories and for each one there are different styles that will suit you best. The categories are… Pear, Apple, Hourglass and Rectangle.

Pear

Pear shape is just like a pear… smaller on the top and heavier on the bottom. Your waist is usually smaller and defined and as everything above the waist is usually small in proportion to below the waist it is important to create a balance. This is the one body type that shoulder pads were made for. They help to balance out your hips and shoulders giving you a hourglass shape.

Plus Size Coats for Pear:

Whenever possible, wear a coat or jacket that stops slightly below the widest part of your hips or slightly above. If it stops right at the widest point it accentuates the hip and creates and imbalance. Find a coat that pays attention to detail on the top portion of the body and have it more fitted there and then looser around the bottom half of your body. Detailing on the top half draws the eye up, so use embellishments like a wide collar, double breasted buttons or a scarf to finish it off.

Apple

Apple shape (also called an O shape) is round in the middle like an apple. You are fuller in the bust, waist and midsection and these sizes are usually proportionate. Your best friend is usually a V-shape to help you elongate your body.

Plus Size Coats for Apple:

Swing coats are perfect for your figure. They swing out over your body, deemphasize your middle and make your legs look great. Another great option is a classic coat with a single line of buttons down the middle, creating the illusion of length and if you wear it open, it further gives your body the shape you desire. A light Trench coat would be a great style for you as well as with the V neck and the belt to give your waist definition.

Hourglass

An Hourglass shape is just like it sounds… fuller at the bust and hips and smaller at the waist giving the classic curvy shape. This is a great shape to dress and to look your best you want to emphasize your best features… your curves.

Plus Size Coats for Hourglass:

The coats that are going to work the best for you are ones that draw attention to your silhouette and curves and that are a little more structured. Tailored coats and jackets were made for you and I’m sure they made the trench coat with you in mind. Wear styles that accentuate the waist and you can’t go wrong.

Rectangle

A Rectangle shape is the classic straight up and down figure without any noticeable curves. This is a great shape as there are no particular spots that are problem areas on your body, but you might want to create more curves and this is easily done with the right styles.

Plus Size Coats for Rectangle:

To create more curves find a coat that cinches you in with a belt or is tailored at the waist to make you look curvier. A well tailored coat will also have the desired effect as well pockets to help define your middle. Another way to add curves is to use detail at the top of your coat and flair at the bottom.
